Nine Things You Didn't Know About 211

Everyone knows about 9-1-1. But fewer people know about 211, the free, anonymous, and confidential statewide service for non-emergency life challenges. Most everyone has needed help at some point in their life and 211 offers a place to turn when you aren't sure where to go.

The 211 Statewide Helpline received over 42,000 requests for resources in 2022 – representing thousands of people who were able to connect with much-needed assistance and support. If you’re not yet familiar or are interested in learning more, here are a few things you should know about this valuable, life-changing resource:

1. 211 can help with complex challenges, whatever they may be.

The 211 database houses over 4,000 local resources. In just one call, search, live chat, or text, you can connect with helpful programs and services in your area. (A bit easier and more efficient than an old-fashioned Google search.) 211 specialists are trained to listen for resources that can help, even if you don't ask about those things directly.

You may be surprised to see what you find. 211 connects people to resources like:
  • Employment and job training
  • Health and mental health assistance
  • Child care and after-school programs
  • Financial coaching
  • Addiction treatment
  • Transportation
  • Affordable housing and rent assistance
  • Legal services
  • Disaster recovery
  • Utility assistance
  • Disability resources
  • Veteran services
  • Tax preparation
But that’s not all! Are you a caregiver that could use support? Are you searching for physical therapy care? Or perhaps, you or your child would like to learn how to ride a bike. Whatever question or challenge you’d like support for, 211 specialists are here to help.

2. 211 is for anyone.

Everyone faces challenges. Job loss, illness, natural disasters and other events can upend anyone’s life. In those moments, 211 is a good resource to have in your back pocket. Best of all, the service is available to everyone and it’s free. Spread the word to your friends, family and coworkers so they are prepared when the unexpected happens.

3. 211 is available 24/7/365.

That’s every day, every hour, every minute of the year. And if you don’t feel like calling, you can text, send an email or use the website which offers a live chat and online search database. It’s free, confidential support available round the clock for when you need it most. Phone, text, and live chat are available 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. If you need help after hours, feel free to leave a voicemail and a specialist will return your call, or you can use the search engine 24/7.

4. 211 is statewide.

Every individual in every community across Hawai‛i can access the Helpline. You provide a zip code, and we connect you with assistance programs and services in your area that can help.

We’re actively working to expand our database of resources on all islands. If your community-based organization isn’t in our database, it takes just a few minutes to add an agency to the 211 network of service providers.

5. You’ll talk to a real person.

A trained, expert specialist answers the call, helps identify the root causes of your problem, and connects you to local resources. Each month, over 85% of Helpline calls are answered within 30 seconds. That’s how quick you’ll connect with live support. They’re not bots, AI, or a voice recording. They are real people in your community who will listen, and genuinely care about connecting you with the help you need.

Sometimes, you just need someone who listens. We encourage you to share your story. Calls are totally confidential. Although you may be calling for food assistance, 211 specialists are trained to brainstorm ways our resource listings can help support other areas of your life. Consider 211 a reliable, trustworthy member of your support system!

6. 211 can now connect you with SUD services.

211 is a part of the Hawaii CARES network, and offers pre-screening for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) services. If you, a loved one, or a client are in need of addiction treatment and support, dial 2-1-1 and press “7” to connect with trained Care Coordinators who can help.

7. Interpretation is available in 180 languages.

If you are a non-English speaker, no problem! 211 interpretation services make help available for those who would otherwise not have access due to language barriers.

8. You can call to find volunteer opportunities in your area.

Looking to get involved in the community? Find local nonprofit organizations who are in need of in-kind donations or volunteer support. You can also explore the AUW Volunteer Portal for hundreds of current opportunities.

9. 211 changes lives.

In 2022, an AUW staff member shared how her family’s life was changed by 211. When this individual unexpectedly gained custody of her four nephews, despite working a full-time job, her checking and savings accounts were quickly drained. As a single mother, she knew that she couldn’t continue alone.

She said that although it wasn’t easy making that first call, it was one of the best decisions she’s ever made. Explaining her situation, the specialist she spoke with connected her with much-needed clothes, furniture, school supplies, and financial support. Overcoming first-time-call fears helped her family rewrite their story.

The 211 Statewide Helpline is a critical resource for those in need, providing a comprehensive and accessible source of information and referrals to essential support services. Whether you're facing a personal crisis or just need help connecting with local resources, the 211 Statewide Helpline is here to help. So if you or someone you know needs support, remember: just dial 2-1-1 or visit AUW211.org.
