Quotes from our VISTAs and the nonprofit organizations that they serve:

"Data collection and outcome analysis are key ingredients for successful program management and improvement. This AmeriCorps VISTA project optimizes Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i’s data collection, reporting and evaluation processes. The ultimate aim is to enhance the delivery of civil legal services, education and outreach to low-income and other disadvantaged individuals in our society.” - Maga Amekudji , Data Specialist VISTA, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii

“Hawaii Literacy aims to strengthen our community by addressing one of the most fundamental skills for individual success. Across our five programs we focus on those with the lowest literacy skills through classes, volunteer mentors, and provided literacy resources. We strive to break the cycles of poverty and under-education by ensuring that anyone has the opportunities they need to succeed. Over my two years with Hawaii Literacy, I have developed data systems for our Adult Literacy and Family Literacy programs, with the goal of increasing capacity for our staff and volunteers.” - Jon Gonzalez, Database and Technology Coordinator & Prison Literacy Program Development VISTA, Hawaii Literacy

“The importance of “ha”, or breath, permeates Hawaiian language and culture. As a VISTA at the American Lung Association in Hawaii, I help families breathe better by strengthening and expanding programs in asthma management, indoor air quality and tobacco prevention and cessation. For example, one in four keiki in Hawaii are living with asthma. We help keiki learn how to manage their asthma through classes taught in schools and through in-home assessments to clear homes of common asthma triggers. We do this by training skilled volunteer facilitators who already live and work throughout the state. My role is to help recruit, train and support these facilitators to improve the health and lives of families in Hawaii.” -  Crystal Milne, Healthy Air Volunteer Coordinator VISTA, American Lung Association
