In 2013, Aloha United Way initiated Early Learning and Early Literacy programs for children in Hawaii. We focus on these areas because literacy skills have been the lowest rated of six dimensions that are evaluated by kindergarten teachers on their entering keiki. Providing children with early learning is necessary to prepare them for school. According to statistics, two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the fourth grade, will end up in jail or on welfare. Funding helps to support students who have difficulty with reading in kindergarten through third grade.
