Emergency & Crisis Services

What we are trying to accomplish:

While most of the funding in our other Impact Strategies is focused on prevention or long-term improvement of the root causes of our problems, Aloha United Way recognizes that many in our community are experiencing difficulties right now. Therefore, Aloha United Way allocates a portion of the funds raised each year to support Emergency and Crisis Services, which will help the most-needy in our community.

In 2009, $479,080 will be devoted to Emergency and Crisis Services.

How we will know we are succeeding:

We will gauge our success by tracking the number of people assisted in the following areas:

  • Emergency medical care for the homeless/uninsured
  • Emergency food supply
  • Support for the escape and sheltering of domestic violence victims
  • Support for families affected by disasters
  • Support for those who are at-risk of becoming homeless
  • Crisis stabilization for selected crisis situations

For each issue area Aloha United Way has developed three-pronged strategies - funding strategies, breakthrough strategies and advocacy strategies. We also administer the emergency food and shelter program, which provides vital funding to this issue area.

To review each of our strategies for the Emergency and Crisis Services area, please click one of the links below:

  • Funding Strategy - Funding strategies include the funds allocated to community agencies to perform the work that addresses the emergency and crisis needs of our target populations. The strategy includes the service delivery targets of the funded agencies. Actual performance is reported in March and September of each year.
  • Breakthrough Strategy - Breakthrough strategies are initiatives proposed by community agencies that include unique or innovative approaches to service delivery.
  • Advocacy Strategy - Aloha United Way recognizes that our funding is just a small portion of the dollars available to address the various community conditions we focus on. Adding our voice to government deliberations at all levels is an integral part of our work.  Each Impact Council, which consists of a group of community volunteers from all sectors, is responsible for managing one of Aloha United Way's issue areas and identifying advocacy issues which will add to the collective impact of our strategies.
  • Emergency Food & Shelter Program - In addition to directly funding Emergency and Crisis Services, Aloha United Way also administers the allocation of federal funding through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.
